Uma Interpretação Liberal de Moby Dick

O ensaio oferece uma intepretação econômica da obra Moby Dick de Herman Melville. Sua tese central é a de que o cetáceo representa, de forma emblemática, os valores que condicionaram o nascimento dos Estados Unidos como nação. A fim de levar a cabo a empreitada, o artigo situa a obra no contexto histórico, descreve a revolução literária que assombrou essa nação e o lugar de Moby Dick no movimento. Exploram-se algumas passagens chave da estória de aventura que fundamentam a interpretação oferecida, em especial os capítulos 42 e 54 da obra. Procura-se desvendar as principais mensagens subliminares do livro. Identifica-se o cerne do livro em termos dos valores que ele afirma, oferecendo-se interpretação de cunho liberal da mensagem da obra, associando-se a criatura, protagonista da obra, à justiça.
